Busy October!

October was a great month for Little Lulu's Confections. We got out and got a lot of exposure.

We began with the Maple Leaf Fesitval on October 15th and 16th in Baldwin City, Kansas. I had cookies, cupcakes, and cake pops I was selling. I almost sold out of cake pops on both days!! The turn out was great and we got a ton of traffic through our booth.. And the weather was perfect for this 2 day event!

The next event was the Yelp Chiller Theatre. It was in the West Bottoms of  Kansas City at The Foundation. I have participated in YELP before but nothing quite like this one. The place was packed full of people all decked out in full costume including the whole entire Roller Derby team! There was food, drink, and desserts galore. They even had a room of make up artists doing face make up for anyone who forgot to dress up (or just wanted to spice up their costume).  I might have stopped by... :)

Here is part of my booth. I had chocolate and vanilla MINI cupcakes with candy corn on top. Pumpkin, Red Velvet, Chocolate, and Vanilla Cake pops and Monster Eyes. And of course Oreo Mummies.

These are my before and after the make up room... Meooooow..

The event had an amazing turnout. I met some really cool people and got to enjoy some other neat flavors from around town. And I was so fortunate to have such a supportive group of family and friends that came out..

I also met someone thru a friend of mine and offered me a tremendous opportunity to make Batman cookies for a person who was involved in creating the new Batman game, Arkham City.

These were totally awesome to work on. And I can't wait to get a chance to play the game!!

THEN on October 29 I got to spend the day with some of my favorite people:) ELITE COMICS!!!

This is me with William, the Elite Comics shop owner. He's awesome!

This is me with Jason Aaron, my favorite comic book writer. I love his books Scalped and Punisher Max!!

Shaun, Lance, and Justin. These guys are pretty cool too... Sometimes..

This young man is amazing!! Nash here is the best salesman in all of Kansas City. :) He's one of a kind!

Here are some of the Monster Eyes and Oreo Mummies!

Nash and I :)

This is me with the one and only David Matheny. I love this guy (most of the time)!

Christina, Shaun, Nash, Me, David, and William. Perfect ending to a great month.

My Story

I thought it was about time to tell my story about how I starting baking and how it has lead me to where I am today.

I'd say it all started with my mom. All my life my mom has loved to cook and would do so for my family and everybody else she knew. Well you'd think I would have picked up baking from her..... But I didn't! She didn't do much baking at all and that is what I was interested in. I figured everybody loved desserts, it makes people happy:) So as I got older my desire for baking grew. Because of different living situations I wasn't always able to bake. But when I finally did get in a position to where I could bake whatever I wanted, when I wanted, and how I wanted, I did.

At first, I attempted fancy cakes and brought them to family gatherings and different events. Then I started doing a lot of cupcakes, and this is when cupcakes were first starting to get popular... Everybody wanted cupcakes. So that's exactly what I focused on and I started up Little Lulu's Cupcakes.

And then one Thursday night, November 11, 2010 to be exact, I decided I wanted to make up some sugar cookies and try to figure out how to decorate them with that glaze I'd seen used. In the very beginning I wanted to see if I'd be able to learn so I could make some really special Christmas cookies for family and friends. So I went online to figure how to do it. I had a few cookie cutters and a kids size, plastic, rolling pin and I attempted my first cookies :)

I made tulips and ice cream cone cookies. I only made up 2 colors of royal icing and decorated them the best I could. Looking back on this picture that I took with my cell phone makes me laugh but I will never forget my first cookies!

I left them out to dry overnight and bagged them up to take to my fellow employees at my day job the next day. Little did I know at the time just how long royal icing takes to dry! They were still wet in the morning when I took them in.  I put them in the break room and they were gone in a flash! Everybody loved them and begged me to bring them in again.

From that night on I have been completely addicted to it. I love learning new ways to do things and to experiment with different recipes. With every cookie I decorate I learn something new. It is very time consuming and much more intricate than decorating a cupcake but I enjoy it so much that I don't care. And for that reason I decided to change Little Lulu's Cupcakes to Little Lulu's Confections because I didn't want to be tied down to anything specific especially if it wasn't cookies.

I love doing all sorts of cookies but I'd say that doing baby cookies is my favorite. I don't think it gets much cuter than a decorated baby onesie:)

That's my story.. for now :)

June Wedding!!

I had the pleasure of doing a wedding cake and cookie favors for two very special people that were married on June 11, 2011. Their wedding colors were white and green.

For their cake they wanted chocolate and vanilla. We decided to go with a tiered cake. Each tier had 2 layers of chocolate or vanilla. The top and bottom were vanilla and the middle was chocolate.  To bring in the colors and have the cake POP I did the middle layer in green buttercream! I think it turned out pretty good for my first wedding cake attempt.

For the favors the bride really wanted wedding dress and wedding cake cookies. So for the dresses they were done in green to match the brides dress but decorated all different. The cakes were all different as well. Some were all white and some had green accents.

Then the cookies were placed in clear bags and tied with a white ribbon. The green dress cookies were packaged with 2 white heart cookies with the bride and grooms initials put on them. And the wedding cake cookies were packaged with 2 green heart cookies :)

Creating a cookie bouquet

Materials I used for the base: Wired ribbon, thin ribbon, patio paint, paintbrush, terra-cotta pot, candy sticks, paper grass, treat bags, and styrofoam.

After baking the cookies, poke them with a skewer then insert the candy sticks and let cool completely.

Paint the terra-cotta pot the desired color and decorate with ribbon. Insert foam securely into the pot.

Insert the cookies into the foam and add the paper grass to cover up the foam.

Wrap the cookies in treat bags and tie ribbon to keep cookies sealed.
